The Naval Museum is the only place that bears witness to the battle of Vieux Grand Port in 1810 between the French and the English.
The battle which lasted for several days was a great attempt by the British to conquer the island.
It was here that the wounded commanders of the French and the British were taken for treatment after the battle.
The story of the battle is taken up in the museum. If you have an interest in history, the Naval Museum is definitely worth a visit.
Blue Bay Marine Park is one of the best places to see beautiful marine life and snorkeling in Mauritius.
The park is considered a jewel of the Indian Ocean. It is the main attraction in a lagoon more than one square kilometer which is rich in corals and fish, with crystal clear water of great visibility.
You can discover more than fifty species of corals. There is also a wide variety of fish among others.
The Biscuiterie Manioc is located in Mahébourg. The Biscuit is very popular on the island and is considered a 100% traditional and unique product in the world.
It was around 1735 that a tuber was brought by Mahe de Labourdonnais. Called Manioc or Cassava, it was mainly used at the time to feed cattle.
Now the biscuits are still made with the same traditional method and are available in different flavors. This unique place is absolutely worth a visit. It will take you to a past atmosphere.
The village of Mahébourg which bears its name from the famous French governor Mahé de Labourdonnais is a folkloric place.
Most popular for its traditional market which takes place every Monday.
The bustling spot on this day is considered the least touristy and most traditional, offering great deals on all its items, including clothes, spices and more.
A wide variety of offers of local products, fruits, vegetables, spices, clothes etc. You can also try traditional dishes like Biryani, Noodles and Kulfi (Traditional Ice Cream).
The Fredrick Hendrik Museum opened in May 1999 and is named after his Stadtholder of the Netherlands which was in power between 1625 and 1647.
Located in the Grand Port region just north of Mahebourg, the place is considered a historic site testifying to Dutch and French colonization in Mauritius.
The first Dutch settled here to colonize the island.
The museum is surrounded by tropical vegetation and includes a visitors’ center with an exhibition of objects found during archaeological excavations in the area in 1997.
Remnants of some of the ruins of the original buildings still remain today. Reproductions of historical paintings and maps from the 17th century are also displayed in the complex.
